We are a family run wedding service and venue that takes pride in helping our community and neighbors. We grew up here as a family so this is not just a business location. It is our home. Families we grew up with and our local friends all know Martoca. We enjoy helping others with donations, fundraisers, hiring local vendors and fomenting micro-businesses. Simply providing our venue for a day-pass for kids who are less fortunate is an example of what we like to offer the community. They love the pool! And sometimes we have soccer games on the lawn.
Please allow us to show you why Martoca Beach Garden has been so special for so many guests along our nearly 40 year history.
La Martoca. Since 1979:
I bet you are wondering how did we come up with the idea for a wedding venue like Martoca Beach Garden, right? Well, it is an amazing story that begins all the way back to 1967. When my Okie mama, named Carol, who hailed from a little town called Duncan, met my Mexican dad, Javier. They met in the University in Mexico City. Carol received a scholarship in Oklahoma for her Masters in Spanish Literature. Javier, who owned a farm, was working that day close by. He was delivering eggs and chicken door to door in her apartment complex. -Yes, young people out there; there was a time when eggs, milk and chicken was delivered to your doorstep- As fate would have it, my dad’s delivery man did not show up for work so Javier covered the sick man’s route; Can you believe his or her luck? Each would say the other lucked out of course. The rest as they say is history. See these lovebirds on upper left.
We will skip the legendary story of how those two lovebirds married and fast forward to how they created La Martoca Beach Garden. Originally La Martoca was to be a 2 story B&B with 8 units that my dad and mom built back in 1979. They left the already over-crowded Mexico city in search of a perfect location for a B&B back in 1978. And so they found it. They believe in themselves and packed up their two blonde haired kids 5 and 6 years old and went for it! They built La Martoca Bungalows. Those young kids were my older brother Frankie and me; Jimmy. (See video on left to learn more)
My parents enjoyed over 35 years worth of wonderful guests; So many stories and memories we created in their bungalows. Tragically, their beloved Martoca was dealt a severe structural blow in 2002 when a hurricane mortally wounded their baby. Yet, not totally destroyed, eventually the Martoca as bungalows would be deemed no longer safe for renting in 2009. Although a mortal blow was dealt to La Martoca Bungalows in 2002, strangely its marvelous reincarnation had began the year prior with a celebration of love.
My wife Vanessa and I were married in Martoca Beach-Garden about 15 years ago on November 3rd, 2001. My family and friends came from all over the USA and Mexico to take part in the big fiesta. The Mariachi and Reggae Bands were in charge of the entertainment, along with good ol’ Don Julio 🙂 However, our wedding was far from a “dream” wedding: Our food for 250 people was late and cold, it had to be reheated in our house stove, we ran out of tequila and had to go get more in the middle of the night from a friend who has a liquor store, and I could go on and on. So it is ironic that we are now experts in weddings! However, as it is in all weddings, although their were issues, the people loved La Martoca and enjoyed the wedding.
A few months after my wedding, a fraternity brother of mine, Juan, who is from Houston, said he had enjoyed our wedding so much that he asked us if he could be married there on the beach as well. We welcomed him and his guests of course, with the condition that they promised to not run out of Tequila like we did! So we had more tequila and dancing in our back yard; Just having friends over basically.
Suddenly, we found ourselves having a Kevin Coster moment as in the film Field of Dreams,”If you build it, he will come”… So we did build it; We simply created a wedding garden and gave Martoca back to the people and our guests who have enjoyed it so much since 1979. The original pools from the building remain in the back portion of the garden. And a few treasures that we kept to ourselves that we see here and there in the garden. They remind us and retain the soul of my parents original vision.
Although the original La Martoca Bungalows are gone, the spirit of enjoying guests and serving others is alive and well. We were inspired by my own wedding back in 2001 and my friends’ weddings and parties we had over the years. We simply made it “official” now and open to all to enjoy.
You are welcome to join me and the other hundreds of couples who enjoy the trend started by my parents back in 1979; Enjoying sunsets, great stories and creating everlasting memories in La Martoca.
Bienvenidos! -James and Familia Basañez
